Steve Strang took me to a minor league hockey game last night in Orlando. We found healthy food to eat, no fights broke out, and the game ended in victory for the good guys in a shootout.
As I looked for a take-away lesson in leadership at the game, it was easy to recall Wayne Gretzky's classic "I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been."
As leaders, we coach our people to where they are going to be, not to where they have been. Often, we see in others what they cannot see in themselves.
It's much like a new business trend. Trends emerge and inform vision. Research and training can help us see changing market conditions long before the trend has diminished.
Leaders need trend-tracking skills. Early adoption of clearly defined trends reduces knee-jerk reactions to market conditions. If my organization is in a line of falling dominoes, I don't need to wait for my turn to tumble. I've got a brain and can move.
The teams we lead are trending in some direction. The individuals on the team are data points. Collectively, data points form a trend line.
Effective leaders move the line toward goal achievement. We lead the line to where it's going.
And, let's not forget the catalyst of godly favor. Our game won't end in a tie.
