A Leadership Trip to Nowhere

As a leader, do you impose a guilt trip on your employees to try to get better results?

I have to be careful how I speak to my Golden Retriever. She can take offense, even when I meant the words for good. I say something like, "No more biscuits," in my alpha dog voice, and her ears drop, her tail stops wagging and she finds a place to curl up and take a nap.

Bad leader!

Effective leaders are careful to observe the impact of their tone of voice as well as specific word choice. Whether intentional or accidental, an inattentive leader can create a feeling of guilt within her team. My observation is that many leaders use guilt as a weapon.

Perhaps a leader of guilt believes, if we can make a person feel badly enough about their performance, the worker will jump to their feet with a strong desire to do better. If I understand the embedded logic, this type of leadership suggests, "make a person or a team feel bad and they will work better." How inspiring!

Don't wake the napping. They've been led on a trip to nowhere.
