What is the metric that matters most in leadership? How do we measure the impact of a leader within an organization?
Is it ROI? Increased top-line? Reduced turn-over? Increased market share/share of mind? What meter matters?
It's not surprising that expectations of leaders vary as much as leadership styles. Conflicts in leadership occur when expectations are not clearly defined. A tug-of-war among leaders occurs when expectations are foggy. Bulldog tenacity is achieved with high-level clarity of purpose.
One thing seems certain in measuring the impact of leadership. Leaders must make things better.
Yes, we must define "things" and we must define "better." But the telltale metric of the impact of a leader is that things are better. We were there. Now we are here.
People have improved. Processes are better.
Pick a metric, any metric. The essence of measurement will be found in the improvement of people and processes.
"So Jesus answered them, 'Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the gospel is preached to the poor'" (Luke 7:22).
