The apostle Paul employed the voice of a leader when he said, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind ... " (Rom. 12:2).
Transformational leaders are first, change agents. This type of leader is an enemy to any status quo scenario. Business as usual is scrutinized.
On the other end of the leadership spectrum, transactional leaders impart direction "by the book." I'm never sure who wrote that book or under what rock the book was discovered. I think it is an exaggeration to couple the words transactional and leader. Transactions are completed by managers. Not all managers are leaders ... especially if transactions are the focus.
Transactional leaders fret about politics and coloring inside the lines. The Sanhedrin council seemed to include a gaggle of transactors. They led by rules. Jesus led transformation with love. The Sanhedrin leader-impostors couldn't think a new thought. Transactional leaders lose sleep over change. Change threatens comfort zones and title empowered incompetency.
Don't try to change the mind of a transactional leader. This is how we do things here.
The essence of transformational leadership is mind renewal. This leader asks many questions. Every question is a challenge to the old normal. Transformation occurs between status and quo. Quantum growth occurs within a disrupted organization. The life of Jesus simultaneously disrupted and transformed. Some folks just can't handle the truth of disruption.
Leaders must operate in softness. Let's keep our minds in a constant state of renewal. "I believe, help me in my unbelief."
Lead me not into my father's Oldsmobile.
"Jesus said, 'If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.' Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, 'Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief!'" (Mark 9:23-24).
