Some leaders become paralyzed in their search for optimum performance.
When we subscribe to the belief that leaders "do the right thing," perhaps we internalize the notion that there is a "best" one thing.
We search for the "right answer." Most of our teachers made sure to pass on the definitive "right."
Leadership rarely operates within absolutes. If a book of right answers existed, less leaders would fail.
We've all seen a church or business with what appeared to be competent leadership. Then a leadership change occurs and the organization soars to new heights. Did the new leader find a better answer?
Effective leaders aren't as concerned with right answers as they are with better execution. In many organizations, the culture and systems are good enough to produce success. But the day-to-day execution of strategy and tactics are less than optimum. Checklists may exist, but the lists aren't checked.
A clear marker of leadership failure is looking for new answers while failing to demand execution of proven systems. There are probably better ways to do anything. Someone will always be around to suggest a better way.
For now, I'll settle for better execution.
"A just weight and balance belong to the Lord; all the weights of the bag are His work" (Prov. 16:11).
