Everything matters. Everything is seen. The life of a leader is lived in a fishbowl.
A truly transparent leader doesn't care about the crowd gathered around the bowl viewing every flip of a fin. Any leader who has led for any time at all is keenly aware of the viewing audience. For a true leader, the fishbowl is a comfortable to place to live. There are no regrets.
The integrity of a leader supports a lifestyle of matching beliefs and behaviors. It's likely that behaviors have impacted people who observe what we do and how we do it. To gain a leadership role in an organization, a leader presents a track record of behaviors that indicate a probability of future success in leading a new team.
Life in a fishbowl begins long before a leader is followed. A young future leader has an instinct about how current behaviors will impact future assignments. Early in their career, future leaders choose to live their life under the brightest of lights, fully aware that everything matters. Even the smallest decision can and probably will impact future success.
Senior leaders and mentors coach their young pups that leaders cannot hide. A leader is not entitled to live a life of duplicity. A leader dies to self for the good of the team and the organization.
The modifier of the word "servant" to the word "leader" has always seemed redundant to me. Can you name a leader who doesn't serve?
We serve with actions and observable behavior. We teach by how we live.
The fishbowl is a classroom, a health care facility and a change agent. The greatest changes in my life came by observation. Health can be restored by the behaviors of a leader. As I think about the greatest changes made in my life, it is easy to recall the touch of a leader.
Be thankful for the opportunity to live an examined life. Everything matters.
