The Dreaded Leadership Treadmill

When leaders reach a plateau in their personal growth, the organization will also tend to flatline.

Leaders are open to hear the voice of God directing them to "Go from your country, your family, and your father's house to the land that I will show you." Abram heard this message at age 75.

Apparently, we cannot conclude that God only requires millennials to pack up the U-Haul. The trip for Abram and Sarai, from Harran to Canaan, must have been difficult. The aging couple didn't have a comfortable trip for their tired bodies, and they weren't bolstered by bottles of nutriceuticals.

God loves to lead us out of our comfort. The Lord seems to draw us into places and situations in which learning will be a necessity.

Leaders take note. If we aren't struggling with opportunities, projects or people, it's possible we have reached a plateau.

How long will a team follow a leader who has dropped anchor into the safety of sameness?

One of the problems with a leader plateau is recognition. Leaders stuck on a treadmill may actually believe they are headed somewhere. Their legs are moving. Breathing is elevated. It feels like progress is being made. Unfortunately, the scenery isn't changing. Everyone is doing what they have always done.

The organization has become comfortable.

God moved Abraham to grow for a kingdom purpose soon to be revealed. Moving is in itself a learning experience. And once things begin moving, progress for the organization and the kingdom begins to accelerate.

As we near the end of another calendar year, it's important to take inventory of our terrain. Are we climbing? Have my surroundings become too familiar? Are the people around me growing?

Pray for revelation as you seek the Lord. The Holy Spirit will keep you moving.

Think new thoughts. Pray new prayers. Find fresh.

Genesis 12:1-5 says,

"Now the Lord said to Abram, 'Go from your country, your family, and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

I will make of you a great nation;
    I will bless you
and make your name great,
so that you will be a blessing.

I will bless them who bless you
and curse him who curses you,
and in you all families of the earth
    will be blessed.'

So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Harran. Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had accumulated, and the people that they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan. They came to the land of Canaan."

Platform Tip No. 27

We cannot expect to move a mountain every day. But we can take one shovel full of anything, every day.

Move something every day. Show up again tomorrow; shovel in hand.

People who try to move mountains in one day give up and stop showing up.
