Dr. Seuss introduced us to Sylvester McMonkey McBean in his book, The Sneetches:
"I've heard of your troubles. I've heard you're unhappy. But I can fix that. I'm the Fix-It-Up Chappie."
Too many leaders confuse their work with that of a repairman. We carry toolboxes in one hand and perhaps our Bible in the other.
I've heard too many leaders claim they spend much of their day putting out fires. This is code for, "I'm running around the office fixing stuff."
Too much fixing can lead to too little learning.
Leaders can miss many new opportunities by focusing on what needs fixing. It's like a builder of a new home who can't get the new house finished because he's spending so much time fixing the old house.
The Pareto principle seems to apply. Only the top 20 percent of what seems broken needs a leader's attention.
Leaders need to spend their time creating rather than repairing.
Perhaps this will create more time to read a Dr. Seuss book to a child.

Today's Scripture
"Jesus strictly commanded them to tell no one of this, saying, 'The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.' Then He said to them all, 'If anyone will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.'" (Luke 9:21-23).
