"I am with you to deliver you!" are perhaps seven of the most significant words in all of Scripture (Jer. 1:8b).
This septuplet of common words is found in a conversation that the Lord was having with the young prophet, Jeremiah. The Lord had been assuring Jeremiah that he had been chosen to speak the very words of God Himself; all that Jeremiah could do was to remind the Lord of his weaknesses, his insecurity and his human deficiency.
When Jeremiah had completed his emotional and desperate soliloquy concerning all of the reasons why the Lord shouldn't use him, the wise Lord put an end to the conversation with this powerful verse:
"They will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you, says the Lord, to deliver you" (Jer. 1:19).
The words that the Lord spoke personally to the insecure and untried Jeremiah are ricocheting through the ages to every one of His children who falsely believe that He is unable to use an imperfect and weak vessel.
The Lord knows that there will be battles that we must fight this side of heaven's glory. However, never ignore the seven authoritative words of eternal promise and of persuasive commitment, "I am with you to deliver you!"
We live in a fallen world that is filled with evil and with pain; in every generation and at every historical juncture, God assigns His dearly loved children to apply the victory of Jesus to the broken places in the world. When a Christian soldier faces a fierce battle, the reminder of God's presence is a certain strategy for an overwhelming victory! You will fight battles, but it is His perpetual companionship that changes the battle from impossible to possible and from doubtful to certain!
Victor Hugo, the great writer of the 19th century, penned these crucial words, "You have enemies? Why, it is the story of every man who has done a great deed or created a new idea."
When you live in your calling, you will always face an angry enemy, but remind yourself of the triumphant words of the Lord spoken to Jeremiah and therefore to you, "They will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you" (Jer. 1:19b, NASB 1995).
God is not surprised when one of His children faces the opposition of the enemy, but He is surprised when one of His children foolishly believes that the battle is a lost cause. When God is on your side, the victory is certain. "I am with you to deliver you," may just be the most potent yet most ignored promise in the Word of God.
Because He is with us, we can have hope when our world tumbles in a colossal pile amidst our hopes and dreams.
Because He is with us, we can have joy when discouragement is knocking at the door of our hearts.
Because He is with us, we can have peace in the midst of a fierce and unremitting storm.
His presence in the life of a fallible person is all that is needed for a glorious and certain victory!
