Church Health: Did God Show Up?

Kim Martinez 2This month, I’ve been looking at multiple tools for looking at how people experience your church. Hopefully, these tools are helpful to you as you consider how you interact with people.

However, I think it is important to end the month of church health with the ultimate check up:

Does God show up?

When I first came to pastoral ministries, I was unfamiliar with the weekly rehash of Sunday morning. The pastor would start the conversation: “How did Sunday go?” For me, the only real question was this:

Did God show up?

If God showed up, in my estimation, we were golden. After all, that is what we are here for—to spend time in the throne room of Jesus, reigniting our relationship with Him.

Over time, I learned to ask different questions:

  • Were the transitions smooth?
  • Was the (music, powerpoint, etc) engaging?
  • Were the bathrooms/facility clean and engaging?

None of these questions were wrong, but in the end, I still come back to my main question: Did God show up? Regardless of whether you get the people connection just right, remember that your real job is to be there, to hear God’s voice, to respond to His prompting, and to watch Him change lives.

God’s work in and through us is a delight, and we reach for perfection; but in the end, it really is all about Him.

This week, as you enter your staff meeting, I encourage you to ask the one question that really matters: Did God show up?
